In 2014, I showcased my photography for the first time. While attending The Art Institute, a classmate invited me to her show, RAW: DALLAS. She was selling tickets and told me that I didn't want to miss it. Being a new comer in Dallas, a night out to an art event was just what I needed. When I got there the event was past my expectations. At the time, the show was held at a venue called The Lizard Lounge. The building was huge and there was something for everyone at every end of the building. Upstairs were tattoo artist doing tattoos right on the spot. Painters doing live body art, graphic designers, and other photographers. Downstairs was a live fashion show which really caught my attention because I really enjoyed shooting clothing. You name it they had it. I loved how diverse the atmosphere was, and how there was something for everyone. I was also impressed with how creative and spontaneous people were at their booths. My classmate encouraged me to do it and said it would be a great opportunity for me and my work. The next showcase was October 2014, Halloween themed, so I went for it.
I learned three things from my last show: how to network, how to take a chance no matter the circumstances, and how important it is to have a support system. I didn't know how I wanted my booth set up or what work I wanted people to see. What would attract them? What questions would people ask? And was my art worth selling? I was so grateful for my God-mother, aunt, and my mom that day. School was still in session, so while I was in class they took time to help set up my booth for me. Friends came out and supported and the night was a success!
So what is RAW? "Raw is an independent organization that is for artists, by artists." They provided a platform for me to creatively show what I was capable of with my photography. I am super excited about this year's showcase because of my personal growth in my work and social skills. On Wednesday, September 19 come out to the organization's newest venue, The House of Blues, and help me celebrate my 4 years of artistry, while seeing what other local Dallas artist have to offer. One of the great perks of this organization is that I am able to showcase in another major city! San Fransisco, Atlanta, Washington D.C....where should I go next? Come by the booth and give your answer and you will receive a $10 off coupon for your next session with me.
Have a great week everyone!
